Integrity Ombudsmen gathered to reaffirm strong will to fight corruption

The ACRC hosted the launching ceremony of the "Council of Integrity Ombudsmen" of public organizations in Seoul on December 9 on the occasion of "International Anti-Corruption Day" designated by the UN.

The Council consists of Integrity Ombudsmen appointed by public organizations such as central administrative organizations, local governments, offices of education and public service-related organizations. With the aim of preventing and eradicating corruption, the Council is expected to provide full support for Integrity Ombudsmen through mutual cooperation and exchanges among council members.

The Integrity Ombudsman system has been operated in Korea since 2010 to improve public sector transparency with public participation. A civilian expert is appointed as the Integrity Ombudsman to supervise, inspect and assess corruption-prone areas of public organizations from the perspective of an independent third party.

Ahead of the launching ceremony, the Council elected Mr. Cha Jae-myung, the Integrity Ombudsman of the Korea Food and Drug Administration, as the inaugural president. It adopted a declaration on the launching of the Council, which stated, "the Council will contribute to spreading a culture of integrity by preventing malpractices and corruption in the public sector."

Moreover, the members of the Council pledged continued efforts in encouraging a corruption-free culture in the public sector by enhancing transparency and credibility of public administration; improving the quality of public services; efficiently executing the public budget; and eradicating corrupt practices with improved irrational systems.

In her congratulatory remarks, ACRC Vice-Chairperson Kwak Jin-young said, "the newly launched Council can offer a precious opportunity to upgrade transparency in the public sector and overall integrity in our society."
