Sacheon beach with clean white sands and 100-year-old Pine trees, is a famous tour site of Gangreung City, and was designated as a national tourist resort where 100,000 people visit every year. Unfortunately, not only tourists but also residents could not enter the beach freely because wire entanglement for military defense has been constructed at the region. The loss of tourism business at the region such as development restriction and decrease of tourists’ number is serious because the wire entanglement had been constructed specifically as long as 200m in the territory of the bathing resort. In September last year, 2,250 residents of Sacheon-myeon filed a collective grievance requesting demolition of the wire entanglement to the ACRC.

At 2pm March 17th, in the community office of Sacheon-myeon, Gangreung City, the ACRC Chairperson Kim Young-ran presided a field-adjustment-meeting attended with residents, Army 23th Infantry Division Commander General Lee In-tae, mayor Choi Myoung-hee of Gangreung City and Mr. Kim Hong-ju Head of East Sea Branch of Gangwon Province. The meeting succeeded with the agreement that the military will demolish the wire entanglement as long as 590m including the bathing resort territory among 1,200m of wire entanglement for military defense constructed in Sacheon beach, instead that Gangreung City will construct landscape-friendly high checkpoints with optical surveillance equipments, and Gangwon Province will support the construction expenditure of surveillance equipments.

“I think it is a valuable resolution that the ACRC concluded through 4 times field-investigations and 8 times consultations with competent authorities for 6 months from last September, and relieved the residents’ inconvenience of long time” said Chairperson Kim.

At the result of the ACRC’s adjustment, the wire entanglement began to be demolished after 40 years of its construction on July 11^th.
